Topic: A Stream Runs Through Us: Writing about Nature at our Doorsteps
Presenter: Jan Worth-Nelson
Date / Time: Tuesday, May 14th, 6-8 PM
Location: 1118 Maxine Street

Description: Seventh Ward Poet, UM - Flint writing teacher and East Village Magazine columnist Jan Worth-Nelson invited us into a creative consideration of the natural world around us -- its loveliness, ugliness, peril and possibility -- with a special focus on Gilkey Creek. What does it mean to have such curves and spills and niches of beauty among us, and how might writing about our neighborhood's native features enrich our experience of living here? This session included a 1/2 mile walk to and from Woodlawn Park. Participants brought cameras, notebooks and writing tools.

Event Participants: Cathy Amboy, Ed Custer, Nic Custer, Rebekah Mikkelson, Elesia Powell

Supplemental Content: Jan provided an inspirational packet (included with physical documentation) featuring quotes by Henry David Thoreau, Mary Oliver, E.B. White, Albert Einstein, George Santayana, George Carlin, Gordon Young, and Alexis de Tocqueville; The Citizen's Guide to Protecting and Improving Gilkey Creek by University of Michigan – Flint University Outreach
